Special thanks to veteran voiceover talent Beau Weaver for granting us permission to share this brief yet clever and amusing review of the comedy musical film Rock of Ages which he posted to his personal Facebook profile:
Saw Rock of Ages. Loved it! No, really. Okay, it’s not a great film. But it was fun. My daughter Susannah is a total movie snob and she loved it. Sure, cheese is spread, scenery is eaten, but it reminds you how great Journey songs still are, so it’s actually kind of a public service like that. [Tom] Cruise kills, of course…especially the live concert scenes. Paul Giamatti is actually every record promo guy who ever called on me in my radio days. Dude. Ouch. The plot…evil people are trying to take over the club/theater, which is out of money, so the heroes have to put on a big show to save the day…um, isn’t that the plot of one of the Muppet Movies? Actually if you think about it, a great remake would be this exact script , unaltered, with the Muppets. Rock of Ages might have been better if Baz Luhrmann did it, but I have to say I enjoyed the crap out of it. Like.
If you’re still asking yourself: who the heck is Beau Weaver? Well, animation fans would recognize his voice from such titles as Transformers (1984, voiced Octane), Superman (1988, voiced Superman/Clark Kent), The Incredible Hulk (1996, voiced Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards), and Silver Surfer (1998, Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards…again). Video gamers should also be familiar with his voice from the popular games Fallout: New Vegas and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (Scorpion, Starbolt, Tiger Shark). He’s also appeared in live-action roles — most notably (for Weird Al Yankovic fans) as Channel Hopping Announcer on The Weird Al Show. He’s also done a ton of narration and promo/movie trailer work — far too much to mention here. Please visit his official site — SPOKENWORD.COM — to see/hear more.
