Peter Pan has been a woman before, so why not Captain Hook too?
Neverland, a prequelesque retcon/reboot/re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s classic fantasy-adventure novel premieres on SyFy in a two-part miniseries event December 4-5 at 9:00pm (EST), and features a bit of celebrity stunt casting with Kiera Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean) as the voice of Tinker Bell.
And okay, so Hook’s not really a woman, but in this series a young James Kirk Hook (Rhys Ifans) is mentored by the piratey, power-mad female Captain Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel).
It sounds a bit like a mash-up of Smallville, the reboots for Star Trek and Spider-Man, and the excellent Peter and the Starcatchers book series by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. (And Starcatchers fans have already been crying “Ripoff!” before Neverland has even aired.)
But besides the curiosity to hear Knightley as Tink, there’s another good reason to watch this show: Bob Hoskins is reprising his role as Smee, twenty years after he owned the role in Steven Spielberg’s Hook.
Here’s the SyFy preview of the series:
